AI Schools offers both in-person and remote critical incident training.
These training sessions allow members of a Senior Leadership Team to participate in a fully interactive, 2-hour session delivered by an ex-police critical incident commander, who will explain how to approach and manage the unexpected.
In addition, we run briefing sessions on lockdowns and training for front-of-school staff (office and reception teams) on dealing with telephone bomb threats, aggressive and/or distressed visitors, and managing phones and communications in a crisis.
Preparing your school for the worst
The Department for Education recommend that all schools test their critical incident plans. We can design a simple tabletop run-through, all the way up to a “live exercise”.
For most clients we recommend starting with a tabletop exercise. During a 90-minute tabletop, which uses a realistic and relevant scenario, participants are able to think about their role and how the group can work together when there is a lack of clarity on what is actually happening.
The tabletop uses inputs to stimulate discussion on what needs to happen and how this can be achieved. These exercises are a valuable way of exposing the group to the pitfalls of trying to make decision in the face of un-certainty and how a clear command structure can overcome this.
As part of this the group is encouraged to discuss the sufficiency of current school’s contingency plans and identify significant gaps in capabilities.
The exercise concludes by confirming with participants their understanding of how they add value in a crisis and how this relates to other people.
Any follow up exercise can then progress to dealing with a scenario under time pressure, which exposes the group to further pitfalls they will need to overcome to respond effectively to any future crisis.
