Client:
A leading Independent School in Southwest London.
Challenge:
Following a critical incident training session delivered to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), a leading independent school in southwest London received an email stating:
“I am armed and coming to the school.”
The message was treated as a potentially credible threat requiring an immediate and coordinated response. As the school had recently completed training and planning with AI Schools, staff were prepared to act quickly, calmly and in line with established procedures.
Solution:
Immediate Lockdown
The school promptly initiated its Lockdown procedures and activated its Critical Incident Plan, both developed with the support of AI Schools. The lockdown was implemented effectively while awaiting police guidance. Staff and pupils remained calm, supported by clear communication and regular updates throughout the 60-minute period it took for police to assess the threat as malicious.
Critical Incident Pathway and Taking Control
The SLT implemented the Gold / Silver / Bronze command structure outlined in the school’s incident management plan. During the post-incident debrief, all leaders reported a clear understanding of their individual roles.
Decision-Making Under Pressure
The SLT member leading the response commented that prior simulation exercises had prepared them for the emotional and psychological demands of a real incident. This preparation enabled calm, measured leadership and prevented reactive decision-making during a period of uncertainty.
Result:
“This experience confirmed the value in your training, as we all knew how to avoid getting caught up in the emotion of events.” - Deputy Head, Independent School in Southwest London
