Client:
A leading Independent School with a large open heritage campus within National Trust land.
Challenge:
The Director of Operations was concerned at the “open access” nature of the campus and how this impeded his ability to fully meet the requirements of Martyn’s Law.
They approached AI Schools to identify what was reasonable and practicable to be fully compliant with Martyn’s Law.
Solution:
A site security walk through to assess the school’s prevailing security profile was undertaken, incorporating a terrorism threat assessment.
This highlighted
-
Extensive use of a sophisticated CCTV system that was not being used to its full potential.
-
Strong building and classroom security, enabling effective lockdown.
-
The need for a loud audible system of alerting staff and pupils across the open campus to an invacuation instruction, with identification of an appropriate cost-effective IP solution to do this.
-
Creation and identification of “refuges” where disorientated younger pupils could seek shelter, irrespective of location or time of day.
.
The SLT were introduced to the new emergency plans to meet Martyn’s Law and made familiar with them through a tabletop exercise. A simple plan documented this and suggested letter to parents provided.
Result:
James Vincent, the Director of Operations said that the consultation with Aldbury was extremely helpful in crystallising the issues he faced with the site and, based on “real world” experience, developing a practical, understandable and easily implementable plan to manage our shelter-in place procedures.
Both the site walk and planning discussion as well as the table- top exercise were invaluable. They cast a constructively critical eye on the school’s current posture and plans as well as helping its Senior and Incident Management Teams visualise, prioritise and respond to various threat scenarios.
The process we went through with Robin is highly recommended if you’re considering your compliance with the site requirements of Martyn’s Law.
